Sidney was glad when a car pulled up right after him. The last thing he wanted was to have to make small talk with Gairn’s family without Gairn being there.

He waited for Gairn to leave the car and come close to him, then wrapped his arm around his waist, pulling him close. He pressed their lips together, smiling at Gairn’s wide eyes. “Hey,” he murmured.

He let Gairn step away and looked at the other man, who was now leaning against the car, his arms crossed over his chest, watching them. “You’re good,” he said.

Sidney frowned. “I’m sorry?”

The man pushed away from the car and held his hand out. “Leyland. And you don’t have to pretend with me. I know.”

“You know...”

“How you and Gairn met and what happened.”

“Ah.” Sidney hadn’t expected Gairn to tell anyone. He wouldn’t have if Reginald hadn’t already known.

“Leyland’s my best friend. We live together,” Gairn said.

That made sense. “Pleasure to meet you.”

Leyland leaned closer. “I was very curious about you.”

Gairn cleared his throat. “We should go. Mom has probably already noticed we’re here, and she’s going to come out any time now.”

Leyland grimaced. “And we don’t want that to happen. Let’s go.”

Sidney wondered what was wrong with Gairn’s mother. From the way he and Leyland were talking, she sounded like a scary person, which was why he didn’t expect the five-foot-something woman who opened the front door as soon as Leyland’s hand landed on the handle.

“Leyland, Gairn! Finally!” she said, drawing first one, then the other into her arms.

Sidney expected a handshake, but when she got to him, she just pulled him into a hug, too, and with a surprising strength he hadn’t expected. He awkwardly hugged her back, looking at Gairn for support, but Gairn looked like he was trying not to laugh.

“So you’re Gairn’s boyfriend. I like you more than the last one. At least you’re pretty,” Gairn’s mom said when she finally let go.

“Mom!” Gairn protested, but she just rolled her eyes.

“I’m Rachel.”

“Uh, Sidney.”

“I know that.” She stepped aside and let them walk into the house. “Come on. Neil is already here.”

Sidney only vaguely remembered Gairn talking about Neil, so he stayed close to Gairn. Besides, they were playing boyfriends. The more time he spent with Gairn, the better it would look. “Neil’s my brother,” Gairn said, leaning closer to Sidney.

Sidney put a hand on the small of Gairn’s back. “Thanks.”

Gairn shrugged. “I should have told you. We went out yesterday to get ready. I can’t believe I forgot to tell you about Neil.”

Sidney leaned even closer, until he knew Gairn could feel his breath on his cheek. “We were... distracted.”

Gairn’s eyes widened, and his cheeks flushed. Sidney quickly kissed his cheek, smiling at Rachel when he caught her watching. She grinned and gave him a thumb’s up. She wasn’t what Sidney had expected, and it made him wonder why Gairn was lying to her. Well, he knew why he was lying about his job, of course, but he didn’t understand the fake-boyfriend thing.
